21 I fell asleep that night thinking about the Chicozapote tree and the gift of gumballs it had given me. I closed my eyes and tried to picture the scene in my mind. Was it all in my imagination? Were its branches really waving to me as I ran for Poppi? When I opened my eyes, bright morning sunlight blazed into my room. I lay still, wondering if it had all been a dream. Suddenly, I jumped from my bed and rushed to the pants I’d worn the day be- fore. I was almost afraid to check the pockets, but when I pushed my hand deep into the first one and then the other, the bubble gum balls were there. I could not wait to go back to the tree!
