I looked up. “Are we doing math?” I counted the gumballs again. “Five gumballs…three red and two blue…” I looked up proudly and smiled. “Five minus three is two!” More gumballs landed beside me and I scooped them into my hand. “Six yellow gumballs and four green. Ten all together.” Zappy slowly swept the green gumballs away from my open palm. I counted. “Six are left. I get it! Ten minus four is six! The same numbers that add together will pair up when you subtract! Six plus four is ten and ten minus four is six!” I’d never felt more proud. My face beamed brighter than the afternoon sun through Zappy’s branches.
